This small mixed breed is a cross between a Maltese and a Shih Tzu, and is also known as a Maltese Shih Tzu, Malti zu, or a Malt-Tzu. The Malshi was first originated in the 1990s to develop a low shed breed that would also be a good companion. They have become a very admired and sought after breed in Australia, but are still very much desired in North America as well as in other countries. The Malshi is typically about 10 inches high, normally weighs 6-12 pounds, and commonly has a lifespan of 12-14 years. This breed is hypoallergenic, a low shedder, energetic, and a low drooler. Cute and cuddly the Malshi would do well living in an apartment, or in any living arrangement, but having a small yard would be preferable. Though they can be lively and inquisitive they are great for new dog owners as well as for an elderly person. Malshi are very cheerful, totally devoted, loyal to their families, and are good with other dogs and pets. They are also very sensitive and dislike being alone, or they can suffer from separation anxiety. This breed is intelligent, easy to train, and therefore would make a great therapy dog. Early training and socialization is also important for this breed. The Malshi does not require a lot of exercise, a simple daily walk or even a run in the house would be sufficient, basically 15 minutes a day. They do enjoy the outdoors and love to play. The Malshi does not handle the heat very well, and does require air conditioning especially when it is hot and humid. They do have a beautiful long, soft coat which does need to be brushed daily, bathed routinely, and do require a trim every 6-9 weeks. They commonly have a white coat with tan markings on their ears, and sometimes on the rest of their body. Their coat can also be a blend of other colors such as white and black, white and brown, and brown and black. The breed does seem to have the tear stains trait under the eyes which is typically found in the parent breeds. It is important to keep their teeth clean, 2-3x/week but daily brushing would be preferable. The Malshi should also have their nails trimmed 1-2x/month, as well as their ears checked weekly. While grooming it would be helpful to examine your pup for anything unusual. With routine veterinary visits, and love, your Malshi should live a long and happy life.
